A group of radiation-specific scientists from the University of California have sent a letter of complaint to John Holdren, Assistant to the President for Science and Technology.  They declared that there are major health risks stemming from the use of full body scanners that are being used at airports.

"Unlike other scanners, these new devices operate at relatively low beam energies (28keV). The majority of their energy is delivered to the skin and the underlying tissue. Thus, while the dose would be safe if it were distributed throughout the volume of the entire body, the dose to the skin may be dangerously high."

In other words, these scanners are specifically designed to target the largest organ of the human body (the skin), and will therefore cause maximum damage.  The letter goes on to warn of the increased danger to pregnant women, children, the elderly, those with compromised immune systems, and cancer patients.  These scanners could increase the risk of cancer, and cause sperm mutations (birth defects and infertility).

There has also been outcry over the fondling of young children by Transportation Security Administration (T.S.A.) agents at airports.  Our children are now the terrorist suspects.  To make matters worse, TSA agents are telling children that their molestations are just a "game", horrifying child abuse experts.  Perhaps they should call the game, "doctor".  It has horrific implications, and five-year-olds do not need to be groped for explosives, or desensitized toward child molesters.  The Fourth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution once protected Americans from unreasonable searches, but the rights of Americans have been arbitrarily suspended under the guise of national security.

Amendment IV: "The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized."

Congressman Ron Paul introduced a law (HR 6416) in November, 'The American Traveler Dignity Act', which would hold T.S.A. agents accountable for their actions.  This would allow American citizens to sue T.S.A. agents for groping, exposure to unnecessary radiation, and etc.  The bill states:

"No law of the United States shall be construed to confer any immunity for a Federal employee or agency or any individual or entity that receives Federal funds, who subjects an individual to any physical contact (including contact with any clothing the individual is wearing), x-rays, or millimeter waves, or aids in the creation of or views a representation of any part of a individual’s body covered by clothing as a condition for such individual to be in an airport or to fly in an aircraft.  The preceding sentence shall apply even if the individual or the individual’s parent, guardian, or any other individual gives consent."

Epilogue

We believe it is vitally important that people be aware of the risks of flying in America, to both their physical and psychological health, and that of their children.  It seems that the government is always finding new ways to expose us to radiation.  We are anticipating a Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) for uranium, and subsequent supplementation capsules.  Perhaps we should be asking, "Do we really need to get exposed to more radiation to prevent terrorist attacks"?  Sacrificing our freedom and our health for an elusive sense of safety is true insanity, particularly when most terrorists can be traced back to our own government.
